What the 4D56 turbo is

The 4D56 is a four cylinder diesel with a 91.1 mm bore and a 95 mm stroke, which gives 2,477 cc. The classic turbo version uses indirect injection, a single overhead cam and an intercooled Mitsubishi turbo. It is not fast, but it is easy on fuel, easy to work on and parts are everywhere.

Later versions, sold as the 4D56U DI-D, moved to common rail injection and a 16 valve head, and power went up a lot. Make sure you know which one your vehicle has before ordering. The Mitsubishi Pajero page is a good place to check which engine was offered in your model and year.

Before you fit a 4D56 turbo engine

The 4D56 has a timing belt and a separate balance shaft belt. Replace both, plus the tensioners, when the engine goes in. A snapped belt is the most common reason these engines end up on our order list in the first place.

• Check the radiator and fan. Overheating cracks heads on older units.
• Clean or replace the intercooler pipes if the old turbo failed.
• Have the injection pump and injectors tested if you are reusing them.
• Use fresh coolant and the correct oil grade from day one.
