People who own a Patrol tend to keep it for a very long time, and the reason is usually under the bonnet. If you need a TD42 engine for sale, you want the same slow-revving 4.2 litre diesel six that pulls all day, does not mind bad roads and can be fixed in the bush with basic tools. That is exactly what we sell.

We offer the TD42 in four conditions, from brand new down to a higher mileage budget unit, and ship to Patrol owners all over the world.

Why the TD42 is still in demand

The TD42 is old-school. It uses pushrods, two valves per cylinder and a mechanical injection pump. There is very little electronics on the early versions, which is exactly why people trust it. It has a big displacement for its power, so it never feels stressed, and it is happy on lower quality diesel.

Nissan built the TD42 from 1987 and used it in the Patrol and Safari Y60 and Y61 and in the Civilian bus. Production finally ended in 2007. The Nissan TD engine page has the background on the whole family.

Choosing your TD42 engine for sale

New: the best option for a touring Patrol that has to cross a continent.
20,000 km: low mileage, well under new money.
45,000 km: a sensible choice for a daily driver.
80,000 km: for a farm truck or a project on a budget.

Before you buy, tell us if your Patrol had the naturally aspirated TD42 or the turbo version, and whether it is a Y60 or a Y61. Mounts, sump and accessories differ a little between them, and it is easier to get it right before shipping.

Fitting tips from people who have done it

Flush the radiator properly. Overheating is what kills most TD42 heads.
Fit a new water pump, thermostat and fan clutch at the same time.
Have the injection pump and injectors checked if you are reusing yours.
If you plan to add a turbo, keep the boost and exhaust temps sensible.

Running a different Nissan diesel? We also stock the RD28 engine, the ZD30 engine and the YD25 engine. If you are comparing with Toyota, the 1HDT and 1HD-FTE are the usual rivals for Land Cruiser owners.
