What is the Mercedes-Benz OM366 Engine?

The OM366 is a naturally aspirated or turbocharged inline 6-cylinder, 5.96-liter diesel engine by Mercedes-Benz. It’s a common engine used in commercial trucks, agricultural tractors, and industrial equipment. First introduced during the 1980s, the OM366 gained popularity because of reliability and easy maintenance.

Key Features:

Engine: Inline 6-cylinder diesel
Displacement: 5.96 Liters
Power Output: 136–170 hp (model-dependent)
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated or Turbocharged
Fuel System: Direct injection
Cooling System: Water-cooled

Whether you need to repower a truck or are looking for a trusted engine for agriculture or industrial use, the OM366 is a great option.

Why Use the Mercedes-Benz OM366 Engine?

1. Proven Reliability

The OM366 is one of the most reliable diesel engines Mercedes-Benz has ever produced. It is built to tolerate heavy work and heavy use without any drop in performance. Many OM366 engines have been known to get past 500,000 kilometers with proper maintenance.

2. Versatility Across Applications

From trucks and buses to tractors and generators, the OM366 engine is a workhorse that has powered many vehicles worldwide. It finds application in cars like the Mercedes-Benz 1114, 1317, 1517, and 1924, and also in military and off-road vehicles.

3. Easy Maintenance

The OM366 uses a straightforward mechanical fuel injection, so fewer electronic gizmos and less repair. It is ideal for operators in backcountry or developing areas where sophisticated diagnosis tools may not be present.

4. Fuel Economy

Though a rugged diesel engine as it is, the OM366 still offers excellent fuel economy, especially for long-haul and heavy-duty use. The more fuel-efficient it is, the lower the cost of operation.

We offer different variants of the OM366 engine for sale, including:
