1. History of the BMW S65B44 Engine

The S65B44 is a variant of BMW’s S65 series of naturally aspirated V8 engines manufactured by BMW M GmbH for the E90/E92/E93 model generation of M3 and special models.

It features a larger displacement (4.4 L) than the standard S65B40 and was used in high-performance low-production models such as the M3 GTS and M3 CRT.

This engine is valued for its high-rev character, sophisticated engineering, and respectable performance personality. For those wanting a more upscale replacement or performance package, the S65B44 would be an excellent choice.

2. BMW S65B44 Specifications & Features

2.1 Core Specifications

Displacement: 4,361 cc (4.4 L)
Power: Approximately 331 kW (≈450 PS) at ~8,300 rpm
Torque: ~440 Nm at ~3,750 rpm
Bore/Stroke: 92 mm x 82 mm (longer stroke than S65B40)
Configuration: 90° V8, naturally aspirated, DOHC, 32 valves

2.2 Engineering Features

Lightweight aluminum alloy block and heads, continuing BMW’s high-revving M engine heritage.
Engineered to rev very high – the original S65B40 variant redlines at ~8,400 rpm.
Variable VANOS (variable valve timing) system, individual throttle butterflies, and other motorsport-derived components.
Produced for high-end performance use: track versions and limited production M3 models.
Reputation: requires careful maintenance due to rod bearing and high-rev stress considerations.

3. Applications – Where the BMW S65B44 Was Used

The S65B44 variant was used in more exclusive or limited-production BMW M3 models:

BMW M3 GTS (2010) – the S65B44 was used in this limited production.
BMW M3 CRT (2011-2012) – sedan application of the high-displacement variant.

Due to its scarceness and performance background, the S65B44 has been highly desired for engine swaps, performance builds, and replacement in original BMW M3s.

Verify maintenance records (oil changes, bearing service, valve adjustments).
Perform compression and leak-down tests if possible.
Check for known weak points such as rod bearings and VANOS system.

5.3 Strategic Considerations

Plan for shipping and import duties.
Prepare your installation setup: stronger mounts, cooling, and ECU tuning.
Ensure compliance with your country’s emissions and registration rules.

6. Used vs Unused vs Rebuilt BMW S65B44 Engines

6.1 Unused/Low-Mileage Engines (Ideal Choice)
