Mitsubishi 4M40 Engine: A Detailed Review of a Tested Diesel Workhorse

The Mitsubishi 4M40 is a 2.8-liter inline-four diesel engine that has come to represent the epitome of reliability, longevity, and practicality in many models of vehicles. Since its introduction in 1991, it has driven everything from the iconic Mitsubishi Pajero SUV to commercial vans, trucks, and military troop transport vehicles. Due to its ruggedness and service-friendly construction, the 4M40 engine remains the off-road enthusiast’s top choice, fleet manager’s go-to powerplant, and do-it-yourself repairman’s best friend across the globe.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore every important detail about the 4M40 engine—its design, performance, strengths and weaknesses, real-world applications, maintenance tips, and what to consider when purchasing a used or replacement engine.

Engine Overview and Design

At its core, the Mitsubishi 4M40 is designed for simplicity, durability, and performance under stress. It features:

Displacement: 2,835 cc (2.8 liters)
Configuration: Inline 4-cylinder
Cylinder Head: Aluminum alloy
Block Material: Cast iron
Valve Train: SOHC (Single Overhead Camshaft)
Valves: 2 valves per cylinder
Compression Ratio: 21.0:1
Fuel System: Direct injection
Turbocharging: Turbocharged and intercooled variants
Cooling System: Water-cooled
Engine Management: Mechanical fuel pump in early variants; electronic control in later variants

Use of a heavy iron block with an aluminum head helps in weight balancing as well as heat management. Being such a heavy base, the 4M40 engine becomes extremely suitable for vehicles operated in harsh conditions—towing, off-road use, and transport application.

4M40 Engine Models

The 4M40 came with some models:

Naturally Aspirated (NA)
Power: Approx. 85 hp at 4000 rpm
Torque: Approx. 180 Nm at 2000 rpm

Turbocharged (TD)

Power: Approximately 125 hp at 4000 rpm
Torque: Approximately 294 Nm at 2000 rpm

Turbocharged + Intercooler (TDIC)

Power: Approximately 140 hp
Torque: 314 Nm maximum

Turbocharging and intercooling have considerable impact on power output and efficiency, and these models are well-suited to larger or off-road cars.

⚙️ Performance and Efficiency

Though not built for racing, the 4M40 engine produces fantastic torque at low to mid-RPM—precisely where you’ll need it most towing, climbing mountains, and taking it off-road. The diesel torque curve is flat and wide and can give smooth acceleration even under heavy loads.

Fuel Economy

City Driving: Around 15–16 L/100 km
Highway: 10–11 L/100 km
Combined: 12–13 L/100 km

These figures, humble by modern diesels, are not out of the question considering the age of the engine and the big cars it typically drives.

Applications of the 4M40 Engine

The versatility of the 4M40 engine is to be found in the various different cars it has been used in:

✅ Mitsubishi Pajero (1991–2006)

The best known application, the Pajero (Montero in some markets) utilized the 4M40 extensively in the 2nd and 3rd generation. Turbocharged and intercooled, it gave the Pajero the torque required for serious off-road and overlanding.

✅ Mitsubishi L200 / Triton Pickup (1996–2006)

The 4M40 gave the L200 good old-fashioned pulling power and reliability. Moving timber material or driving out into the bush, it was sufficient.

✅ Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear (1994–2006)

This van-crossover oddity exploited the torque and fuel economy of the engine—champion among vanlifers and overlanding adventurers.

✅ Mitsubishi Canter Light Truck (1996–1999)

The Canter light truck model was ideal for city logistics and light industry, where 4M40 reliability was the top priority.

✅ Mitsubishi Type 73 Military Vehicle

Used by the military forces of Japan, this small 4×4 truck used the 4M40’s ruggedness and resistance to field abuse.

Problems and Fixes

Due to its durability, the 4M40 engine is not immune to idiosyncrasies. These are the most common reported problems:

1. Cylinder Head Cracking

Reason: Overheating due to coolant leaks or radiator neglect.
Repair: Fit an aftermarket high-performance head or replace with a new OEM head.
Use good-quality coolant and maintain radiator cleanliness.

2. Timing Chain Wear

Cause: High mileage without timing chain check or oil contamination.
Repair: Replace guides and chain at about 200,000 km to prevent catastrophic failure.

3. Turbocharger Oil Leaks

Reason: Bearing deterioration due to aging.
Repair: Rebuild or replace the turbo; pre-prime turbos always after repair.

4. Carbon Buildup on the EGR Valve

Reason: Low-quality diesel fuel and excessive low-speed driving.
Repair: Clean the EGR valve regularly or install an EGR delete kit where permissible.

5. Glow Plug Issues

Reason: Worn-out plugs or a malfunctioning relay that hinders cold start-up.
Replace with good plugs and inspect relay.

Maintenance Best Practices

Maintenance is the key to prolonging the life of your 4M40 engine to beyond 300,000 km. Here’s the checklist:

Service Item and Interval
Engine Oil + FilterEvery 5,000–7,500 km
Fuel FilterEvery 15,000 km
Air FilterEvery 10,000–15,000 km
Valve AdjustmentEvery 20,000 km
Timing Chain CheckEvery 150,000–200,000 km
Coolant FlushEvery 50,000 km
Turbo InspectionEvery 100,000 km

Quality parts, especially diesel-specific engine oil (15W-40 or 10W-30), are crucial to long-term reliability.
